Good Gravy, We Give Thanks for Public Pensions!

As is the tradition here in America, every year on the fourth Thursday in November we gather with our loved ones to break bread and give thanks for all the good things in our lives. Here at NPPC, we’re always sure to add defined-benefit pensions to the list of things we’re grateful for. From the job vacancies that pensions help fill to the economies they support, public pensions are a retirement vehicle for which we can all give thanks.

This year we have seen the long-term effects that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the economy and public-sector staffing levels across the country. From the massive teacher pipeline shortage to the national deficit in public safety officers, there’s no doubt that our existing public employees are being pushed to the brink–and they keep showing up for us every day.

We rely on public employees to take care of us all year long. Not only do they teach our children, run our state agencies, care for our parks, and answer our emergency calls, but public employees often go above and beyond the call of duty to serve our communities in times of need. The promise of a secure retirement is just one way to say “thank you” to the 14.8 million state and local public employees who dedicate their lives to serving their communities. This Thanksgiving, be sure to thank a public employee in your life–and tell them you’re here to join the fight to help #ProtectPensions.
