Celebrating Public Service

Since 1985, the first week of May has been designated Public Service Recognition Week, a time to celebrate and commemorate hardworking public servants that serve in their communities each and every day. Federal, state, and local government workers all play a significant role in our everyday lives. From making sure the roads and bridges are safe to travel, to protecting and caring for citizens, public employees are always there. Today, NPPC would like to highlight the importance of public service and what it means to some of these employees.

In honor of Public Service Recognition Week, several public employees took to Twitter to share why the work they do is important to them using the hashtag #IServeBecause

Here are some of the responses:

“I am passionate about helping others. Our library has something to improve everyone’s life whether it is storytime, online homework help, space to gather, wifi, or borrowing from thousands of items. Libraries change lives and I am proud to help make that happen!”
–Jean S., Library Director.

“I take pride when we fix what residents can visually see. When it comes to sidewalks, streets, landscaping, street signage, etc., it’s nice to do it to the best of your ability; like its your own” –Joe A., Maintenance Technician, Public Works

“I value public service and believe my service is making a difference in the community.”
–Sirian L., Interpreter, and translator, Oklahoma Health Care Authority.

“I love being part of a team that works hard to improve the quality of life every day for the community I live in.” –Shelly S., Administrative Assistant, Public Works.

“I want to help create a more diverse, equitable workplace and provide employees with the support and development they need.” –Kerri K.

Remember to thank the public employees working in your communities this week. You can also show your appreciation by making sure your public employees maintain access to defined-benefit pension plans. That way, when their service is over, they can retire with dignity.
