Alaska Public Pension Coalition (AKPPC)
Founded in 2021, the Alaska Public Pension Coalition’s (AKPPC) primary purpose is to re-open the state’s closed pension plans.
About Alaska’s Coalition
In 2006, the Alaska legislature eliminated the option for a defined-benefit pension plan for public employees, including teachers, state workers, firefighters, and police officers.
Since then, public employees only have access to a defined-contribution 401(k) plan, while many do not receive Social Security benefits when they retire. The need for a defined-benefit pension plan for public employees has reached a crisis point with job vacancies and unfilled positions across every sector of public employment in Alaska.
The goal of the AKPPC is clear: the legislature must pass comprehensive legislation through both the Alaska State House and State Senate that restores the option for a defined-benefit pension.
